Mazda have announced the new version of their hatchback will hit the UK with two engines from launch, five trim levels and deliveries will commence in May, with more powertrains and a saloon to follow later in the year.

The initial options under the bonnet are a 122bhp 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol unit, or a 116bhp Skyactiv-D deisel counterpart. Following these to market later on will be the Skyactiv-X spark controlled compression ignition engine, which promises to shake things up a bit. The Skyactiv petrol engine uses Mazda's mild hybrid system, which recovers kinetic energy and deactivates cylinders where possible to reduce fuel consumption.

As the first model in the new generation of Mazdas, the new Mazda3 debuts the latest advance in the brand's KODO design language. The five trim levels available after the launch are SE-L, SE-L Lux, Sport Lux, GT Sport and GT Sport Tech.

Standard equipment across all models includes a heads-up display with traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, LED headlights, sat-nav and advanced mobile connectivity – aka Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Moving up from there, SE-L Lux and above features keyless entry, a reversing camera and heated front seats, whilst Sport Lux adds chrome detailing in the cabin and rear privacy glass. Leather seats with electric adjustment arrives with GT Sport, as does a heated steering wheel and Bose audio, whilst the range-topping GT Sport Tech adds advanced safety gadgets, a 360º camera and driver attention monitor – this spec is only available in conjunction with the petrol powertrain on offer.

Offered exclusively on the hatchback, Mazda's new Polymetal Grey makes its debut. SE-L and SE-L Lux models come on 16-inch silver alloys, whilst the Sport Lux and up get dark grey 18-inchers to go along with the rear privacy glass and piano black trimmings that add that little bit fo garnish. Petrol models are expected to start at £20,595 with the diesel range begins at £22,395.
